$39

/month (Basic)

WHAT YOU ACTUALLY PAY

$200-500

/month for a real store

SURPRISE FACTOR

5-13x

higher than expected

The Short Answer

Shopify's $39/mo is just the platform fee. The real cost includes transaction fees on every sale, mandatory apps for basic functionality, premium themes, and shipping markup. Most merchants pay 5-13x the advertised price.

5 Reasons Your Shopify Bill Is So High

1

Transaction Fees Eat Your Margins

Cost: 2% of revenue on Basic (non-Shopify Payments)

This is the biggest hidden cost. If you use any payment gateway OTHER than Shopify Payments (Stripe, PayPal, Square, etc.), Shopify charges an additional 2% (Basic), 1% (Shopify plan), or 0.6% (Advanced) on EVERY transaction — on top of your gateway's fees. A store doing $10K/mo on Basic loses $200/mo to Shopify alone. Even using Shopify Payments, you still pay 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction. There's no way to avoid payment processing fees entirely.

2

App Dependency Is By Design

Cost: $50-200/mo for 6-12 essential apps

Shopify's core platform deliberately lacks features that require paid apps. Need product reviews? $10-25/mo. SEO tools? $15-30/mo. Email pop-ups? $10-20/mo. Upsells? $20-50/mo. Advanced analytics? $15-40/mo. Loyalty programs? $20-50/mo. The average Shopify store runs 6-12 paid apps, spending $50-200/mo — often MORE than the Shopify subscription itself. This is a strategic choice by Shopify: keep the base plan cheap, monetize through the app ecosystem.

Premium Themes Are Essentially Required

Cost: $250-350 per theme, often purchased 2-3 times

Shopify offers free themes, but they're basic and generic. The top-performing stores use premium themes ($250-350 from the Shopify Theme Store). Many merchants buy 2-3 themes before finding the right fit — that's $500-1,000 in theme costs. Themes also need updating or replacing as your brand evolves. Third-party marketplaces (ThemeForest) offer cheaper alternatives ($60-80) but with less Shopify-specific optimization and support.

Plus Pricing Is Astronomical

Cost: $2,300/mo starting

If you outgrow Basic/Shopify/Advanced and need checkout customization, multi-store management, or Shopify Flow automations, Plus starts at $2,300/mo — a 59x jump from Basic ($39). Many growing brands hit a wall where they need Plus features but can't justify 60x their current plan cost. There's no middle-tier option between Advanced ($399/mo) and Plus ($2,300/mo). This $1,900 gap is the biggest pricing cliff in e-commerce.

Shopify Payments Lock-In

Cost: Indirect — 2% penalty for leaving

Shopify Payments is designed to avoid the 2% surcharge, which means you're effectively locked into their payment processor. This creates problems: Shopify Payments isn't available in all countries, has stricter fraud/dispute policies than Stripe, and can freeze or hold funds for high-risk product categories. If Shopify Payments doesn't work for your business, you pay the 2% tax to use alternatives. It's a lock-in mechanism disguised as a discount.

Real Cost Example: Growing Store

// Store doing $20K/mo, using PayPal, 10 apps, premium theme

Base plan (Basic): $39.00

Transaction fees (2% of $20K): +$400.00

App subscriptions (10 apps): +$150.00

Premium theme (amortized): +$25.00

True monthly cost: $614.00/mo

vs $39 advertised = 15.7x surprise factor

What You Can Do About It

Cost Saving Tip

  • • Switch to Shopify Payments immediately — eliminating the 2% fee saves $200/mo on $10K revenue
  • • Audit apps monthly: most stores have 3-4 unused apps still billing
  • • Consider WooCommerce (self-hosted) for lower transaction costs and free extensions
  • • Use Shopify's built-in features before buying apps — email marketing, basic analytics, and discount codes are included
  • • For high-volume stores: negotiate Shopify Plus pricing — enterprise reps have discount authority
